Rep. Jonathan L. Jackson Votes to Keep Government Open
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, U.S. Representative Jonathan L. Jackson (D-IL-01) released the following statement on his vote to keep the government open:
"Today, I voted with 334 of my House colleagues to keep the government open. This short-term funding bill is far from perfect, but the alternative would have been terrible. Millions of our troops and government employees would have been forced to go without pay. Nearly 7 million women and children would have lost access to food benefits. Additionally, other critical government services, ranging from airport security to loan assistance, would have been hurt.
"But this is not a moment of celebration. The funding bill only lasts 45 days, includes no aid for Ukraine, and 90 House Republicans voted against it. But still, we avoided disaster. Now is the time for the Senate to do its part and pass this bill, despite its flaws.
"This entire process has reflected a shift from an era of loyal opposition to an era of obstructionism. Some extremists in this Congress want to shut the government down, remove assistance for the poor, increase benefits for the well-connected, and balance our growing deficit and debt on the backs of poor and working communities. It is wrong and needs to end."
