Housing

The district is currently facing a pressing housing crisis, with escalating costs leading to a severe shortage of affordable and quality housing. This situation is particularly challenging for the district's significant minority population, with African Americans constituting 49% of the district. Congressman Jackson has cosponsored the Government Agencies Affordable Housing Conversion Act, a measure aimed at repurposing underutilized government facilities into affordable housing. Additionally, he cosponsored the Community Housing Act, a proposal to invest over $500 billion in federal programs that fund the construction of affordable and deeply affordable housing.
Congressman Jackson has been a huge advocate for ending homelessness, particularly during the harsh winters of Chicago. He firmly believes that no one should have to endure living on the streets if it can be prevented. For these reasons, he supported the Prevent Homelessness Act, which aims to increase funding to prevent renters and homeowners from losing their homes, is a testament to his dedication. He also cosponsored the Community Housing Act, which would transform the Housing Choice Voucher program into a federal entitlement, ensuring that every eligible household receives assistance.
Congressman Jackson is aware of this need to provide more environmental resources to the first district. He supported the SHADE Act, which provides grants for planting trees in areas that lack sufficient shade. He also supported the Green New Deal for Public Housing Act, a measure that aims to rehabilitate and upgrade public housing to reduce health hazards and improve energy efficiency. The act also sets a goal of transitioning the entire public housing stock into zero-carbon, highly energy-efficient developments as quickly as possible.
