Rep. Jonathan L. Jackson Applauds Federal Court's Decision On Alabama's Congressional Map
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today U.S. Representative Jonathan L. Jackson (D-IL-01) applauded a federal court's decision to strike down Alabama's Congressional map. The three-judge panel found the proposed map still did not comply with the Voting Rights Act ("VRA") for failing to include a second majority-Black district.
"Today is a victory for democracy and the rule of law. For too long, Black Alabamians have seen their right to vote diluted and undermined. This ruling shows how important the Voting Rights Act is to protect the rights of all Americans. This heroic ruling by the federal court will set the path for the passage of additional legislation such as H.R. 5295, the "Expanding the VOTE Act," and H.R. 4987, the "Democracy Restoration Act of 2023."These critical pieces of legislation have the potential to strengthen the VRA by ensuring the right to vote is protected for all Americans."
