Rep. Jonathan Jackson Announces Over $1.22 Million in NEH Grants for the University of Chicago to Support Humanities Projects in the First Congressional District

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Jonathan Jackson proudly announces over $1.22 million in funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) for the University of Chicago to support two significant humanities projects within the First Congressional District. These grants are part of the NEH's announcement of $35.63 million in grants for 258 humanities projects across the country. More information about the awards can be found in the NEH's press release.

In a statement, Congressman Jackson said, "I am proud to support and advocate for these essential resources for our community. The University of Chicago's work in preserving endangered languages and building capacity for humanities projects will have a lasting impact on our collective knowledge and appreciation of the diverse cultural tapestry that makes up our society."

The University of Chicago has been awarded the following grants:

  1. Documenting Endangered Languages – Preservation

Program Description: Support for linguists to study and preserve an endangered indigenous language.

Outright Amount: $225,169

Project Director: John Lucy

  1. Infrastructure and Capacity Building Challenge Grants

Program Description: A matching grant to generate private support for a humanities project.

Matching Amount: $999,000

Project Director: Torsten Reimer
