Congressman Jonathan L. Jackson on the anniversary of Michael Brown’s Death

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Ten years ago on August 9, 2014, Michael was shot and killed by a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri. He was just 18 years old.

Michael’s death fueled the national debate about policing and race. As my father, the Reverend Jesse Jackson Sr. stated, Michael Brown’s story is a tragic example of a pattern of behavior relative to blacks and the police.

More work needs to be done. Trust of police in our black communities is still not 100%. Many police department demographics still do not reflect all of the people in the communities in which they serve. We must get serious about creating an urban policy that addresses unemployment, healthcare, housing, and education.

Michael Brown’s death was not in vain. I am committed to seeing this work through for equality and justice. I need you to work with me. We are in this together.
