FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CHICAGO, IL - Congressman Jonathan L. Jackson (D-IL) issued the following statement today applauding the decision by U.S. District Judge Sara Ellis, who ruled that federal immigration officers in the Chicago area must wear body cameras after widespread reports of abuse and violence against peaceful protesters during President Donald Trump’s immigration enforcement operations.

“I want to commend Judge Ellis for her courage and clarity in demanding transparency and accountability from federal law enforcement,” said Congressman Jackson. “Her ruling reaffirms a fundamental truth: our government must never turn its power inward against its own people. What we witnessed on the streets of Chicago and other cities was federal overreach on a scale that erodes public trust, chills lawful protest, and deepens division.”

Jackson criticized the Trump administration’s continued deployment of militarized tactics in American communities. “The images of federal agents in combat gear, firing tear gas at citizens and journalists, are stains on the moral fabric of our democracy,” he continued. “This is not law enforcement, this is intimidation. The United States cannot allow its cities to become occupied zones under the pretext of immigration enforcement.”

The Congressman also demanded immediate accountability from federal officials involved. “Tom Homan’s reported acceptance of a $50,000 bribe and his central role in these unconstitutional crackdowns are grounds for his immediate resignation,” Jackson stated. “I am calling on both the FBI and the Department of Justice to release the full Homan tapes without delay. The American people deserve to know the truth, in full, now.”

Jackson reaffirmed his commitment to protecting civil rights and restoring faith in law enforcement through transparency, oversight, and justice. “We stand with Chicago. We stand with those who believe in due process, in dignity, and in democracy. Power unchecked is power abused. Our city, our nation, and our Constitution deserve far better.”
