CONGRESSMAN JONATHAN L. JACKSON CONDEMNS RACIST ATTACKS AGAINST IMMIGRANT COMMUNITIES THAT HAVE BEEN PROMOTED BY EXTREME MAGA REPUBLICANS
September 12, 2024 | Press Release
Washington, DC – In recent days Extreme MAGA Republicans have unleashed a series of vicious and racist attacks against immigrant communities, specifically Haitian communities in Springfield, OH. This is the macro-narrative that has been promoted by former President Trump for nearly a decade, he has said in 2015:
"When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re not sending you. They’re not sending you. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people."
A New York Times report in December recounted a meeting in the Oval Office at which Trump railed against the recipients of US visas in 2017. During it, he reportedly complained Haitians “all have AIDS” and Nigerians would never “go back to their huts.”
Further, the former President reportedly said in 2018:
"Haiti? Why do we want people from Haiti here?" Then they got Africa. 'Why do we want these people from all these shithole countries here? We should have more people from places like Norway." "Why do we need more Haitians?" "Take them out."
And even as recently as this week’s Presidential debate in front of 50,000,000 viewers, he stated: “In Springfield [Ohio], they’re [immigrants] eating the dogs, the people that came in, they’re eating the cats, they’re eating the pets of people that live there”.
These statements by the former President have been echoed by Extreme MAGA Republicans in Congress both on social media and even on the Floor of the House of Representatives. In a statement, Congressman Jonathan L. Jackson (who sits on the House Foreign Affairs Committee) said:
“This type of extreme racism, jingoism, and xenophobia has no place in American public life and absolutely no place in our politics. I sit on the House Committee on Foreign Affairs subcommittee on Africa and the Diaspora. I understand the contributions made to this nation by Immigrants and specifically the Haitian community. These efforts to demonize and divide America are directly out of the Project 2025 playbook to destroy America. Extreme MAGA Republicans seek to turn Americans against one another by promoting stereotypes, lies, and conspiracy theories that make us view our neighbors as being fundamentally ‘other’. I condemn in the strongest possible terms these efforts to divide America and pledge to my constituents to work across party lines to bring this nation together and secure a future where all men are created equal and also treated equally under the law.”
Congressman Jackson will be hosting an African Diaspora Forum at the 53rd Annual Congressional Black Caucus on Friday, September 13th, 2024 from 1:00-2:30 pm at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, 801 Mount Vernon Ave., N.W. Washington DC 2001 room 146-B. This forum will address the critical issues facing Africa and the Diaspora as well as U.S. Policy towards Africa and the wider community.
