Congressman Jonathan L. Jackson Applauds USDA's Reinstatement of the 1890 National Scholars Program

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congressman Jonathan L. Jackson, representing Illinois' First Congressional District, today expressed strong support for the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) decision to reinstate the 1890 National Scholars Program and extend the application deadline to March 15th.

"I commend Secretary Rollins for reversing the suspension and reopening applications for the USDA 1890 National Scholars Program," stated Congressman Jackson. "This initiative has been pivotal since its inception in 1992, offering indispensable support to students at our 19 historically Black land-grant universities."

The 1890 National Scholars Program, established to honor the Second Morrill Act of 1890, provides full tuition, fees, books, and room and board to students pursuing degrees in agriculture, food, natural resource sciences, or related fields at these institutions. In fiscal year 2024 alone, the USDA allocated $19.2 million, awarding 94 scholarships to deserving students.

For Chicago and the broader Illinois First Congressional District, the program's impact is profound. While Illinois is home to one of the 19 historically Black land-grant universities, the program's reach extends to students from the district attending these institutions nationwide. By supporting these scholars, the program addresses educational disparities and fosters a diverse pipeline of professionals in agriculture and related sectors.

The suspension of the program raised significant concerns, as it threatened to undermine decades of progress in rectifying historical racial discrimination within the land-grant system. Congressman Jackson emphasized the importance of public advocacy in influencing the USDA's decision to reinstate the program.

"This reinstatement is a testament to the power of collective action," Jackson noted. "It underscores the necessity for public pressure and awareness in challenging decisions that adversely affect our communities. Activism remains a crucial tool in countering agendas that seek to marginalize, such as the extreme MAGA ideologies promoted by figures like Donald Trump and Elon Musk."

Congressman Jackson remains committed to ensuring that programs like the 1890 National Scholars Program continue to receive support and recognition, reinforcing the nation's dedication to equity and educational excellence.
