Congressman Jackson Statement following the release of the Tyre Nichols video footage

January 30, 2023

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Congressman Jonathan Jackson (IL-01) issued the following statement in response to the body camera footage from Memphis Police in the killing of Tyre Nichols:

“I am horrified by the lack of humanity and the brutality displayed by the Memphis Police Department resulting in the loss of yet another young black life. Tyre Nichols should be home playing with his 4-year-old son. Instead, his death is an example of the violence on Black people at the hands of police officers.

Two years after the murder of George Floyd, we continue to witness the murder of Black Americans by the officers sworn to protect them. We continue to mourn the loss of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Eric Garner, Tamir Rice, Michael Brown, Keenan Anderson, and every innocent life who should still be with us today.

Our broken policing system remains the problem. It is not enough to reform a system built on the oppression and violence against Black Americans.

We must end this cycle of violence and commit ourselves to make real, systemic, lasting change.”
