Congressman Jonathan L. Jackson Condemns Walgreens Closures in Chicago's Underserved Communities

Chicago, IL — Congressman Jonathan L. Jackson (IL-01) today expressed deep concern over Walgreens' decision to close multiple stores in Chicago's South and West sides, including the Bronzeville location set to shut its doors on Wednesday. These closures disproportionately affect underserved communities, exacerbating existing disparities in access to essential services.

"The closure of these Walgreens stores is more than just a business decision; it's a direct blow to communities already facing significant challenges," said Congressman Jackson. "Residents rely on these pharmacies for medications, health consultations, and basic necessities. Removing these resources creates 'pharmacy deserts,' forcing individuals to travel longer distances for essential services, which is both a financial and physical burden."

The recent wave of retail closures can be attributed, in part, to the economic policies implemented by President Trump and the Extreme MAGA Republicans. Protectionist trade measures, such as the imposition of tariffs on imports from key trading partners, have led to increased operational costs for retailers. These costs are often passed down to consumers, resulting in higher prices and reduced purchasing power. Consequently, retailers are compelled to shut down stores in less profitable areas, disproportionately impacting low-income and minority communities.

Moreover, the administration's immigration policies have led to labor shortages in the retail sector, further straining businesses and contributing to store closures. The combination of increased operational costs and reduced workforce availability creates an untenable situation for many retailers, particularly those serving marginalized communities.

"It's disheartening to see national policies that favor the wealthy and powerful at the expense of our most vulnerable populations," Congressman Jackson continued. "The Extreme MAGA agenda prioritizes corporate interests over people, leading to decisions that undermine the well-being of our communities."

The closure of these Walgreens stores is part of a broader trend of retail shutdowns across the nation. In 2025 alone, retailers are expected to close 15,000 stores, more than double the number in 2024. This surge in closures is a clear indication of the adverse effects of current economic policies on both businesses and consumers.

Congressman Jackson calls for immediate action to address these issues, including the reassessment of trade and immigration policies that disproportionately harm underserved communities. He urges local and federal stakeholders to collaborate on solutions that preserve essential services and support the economic vitality of all neighborhoods.
