Chicago IL – December 1, 2022 – Jonathan Jackson - son of famed civil rights icon, the Rev. Jesse Jackson and social justice advocate, Jacqueline Jackson, will be sworn in as the new Congressman representing Illinois’ 1st Congressional District! Jonathan is the couple’s second son to be voted into the House of Representatives.
Jackson won the coveted seat in the last month’s general election by a landslide, garnering more than 66% of the vote. The win was of great, historical significance as Jackson will replace Congressman Bobby Rush, who served for 30 years before announcing his retirement in January.
In accepting the honor in front of hundreds of supporters, Jackson spoke about his mother and father’s influence on his life of servant leadership and public service, “I was blessed by my father to have been prayed over by Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., my godfather and of whom I share his middle name, ‘Luther’…I want to thank my mother and my father, Mrs. Jacqueline Jackson & Reverend Jesse Jackson for instilling in me a sense of service. No matter how high I go, I will always be looking up to you. My father has done so much, for so many, for so long. I've seen my father bring hostages home. I've watched my father create trade agreements and alliances with corporate America to bring our resources back. I've watched my father be a voice for the voiceless. I've watched my father – with just the faith that he's had and his belief in his God – try to make a better humanity," Jackson said. "But on this day, I can watch my father see that I want to be just like him and carry his name and good works forward." Jackson will be sworn in as a member of the 118th United States Congress on January 3, 2023 in Washington, DC. The ceremony will also be carried LIVE on C-Span.
