WASHINGTON – On February 11, 2025, U.S. Representatives Jonathan L. Jackson (D-IL-01), Cleo Fields (D-LA-06), and Sylvester Turner (D-TX-18) launched the Congressional Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Caucus.
The caucus aims to amplify and protect diversity, equity, and inclusion, workers’ rights, and raise awareness to legislators about the importance of embracing diversity. This encompasses the symbiotic relationship, philosophy and culture of acknowledging, embracing, supporting, and accepting those of all racial, sexual, gender, religious and socioeconomic backgrounds.
The launch was marked by the caucus's first congressional briefing of the year, titled What is Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion? The purpose of the briefing was to learn about the history, intent, and true meaning of diversity, equity, and inclusion, which featured policy experts from UnidosUS, the National Council of Negro Women, Asian Americans Advancing Justice, the Human Rights Campaign, and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).
“Our mission is to protect and promote diversity, equity and inclusion within American institutions and to raise awareness in legislation,” said Rep. Jackson. “Diversity, equity and inclusion is an American value, and it’s good for business.”
“Diversity, equity, and inclusion are at the heart of building a stronger, more equitable society. This important discussion, hosted by the Congressional Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Caucus, brings together distinguished experts to explore the history, intent, and true meaning of these principles,” said Rep. Turner. “By engaging in these conversations, we take steps toward meaningful action that ensures every voice is heard and valued.”
“I am proud to serve as a co-chair for the Congressional Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Caucus. Diversity and inclusion are two of our nation’s greatest strengths and through the work of this caucus, I am committed to bringing people together from all walks of life,” said Rep. Fields. “When we all work together, we can create a more equitable and inclusive world for everyone.”
The caucus aims to demystify diversity, equity, and inclusion, highlighting its importance in shaping a more just and prosperous nation. It also seeks to push back against efforts, such as executive orders from the Trump administration, that have sought to eliminate diversity, equity, and inclusion programs.
Ultimately, the caucus affirms that diversity, equity, and inclusion is not just an initiative—it is a fundamental part of American progress, ensuring that all voices are heard and that opportunities are open to everyone, not just a privileged few.
