WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congressman Jonathan L. Jackson has introduced the “Sanction Sea Pirates Act of 2024” to strengthen and ensure maritime safety.
“Piracy at sea is very costly in many ways, including higher insurance premiums,” said Jackson. “In many cases, ships must reroute to avoid pirates resulting in extended days at sea. These higher shipping costs are passed on to consumers through higher priced goods.”
Moreover, piracy and sea robbery endanger civilians, disrupt economies, encourage corruption, and could trigger an environmental disaster if attacks occur in congested sea-lanes. Cruise ships, ferries, and cargo freighters present additional opportunities for terrorists to create human casualties and inflict more economic harm.
We must eliminate piracy by holding individuals and all organized crime groups to account. This includes sanctioning any individual or groups associated with or benefiting in any way from piracy, blocking their assets and denying them entry into the United States.
The transit of about 90% of trade is facilitated through our seas supporting the livelihoods of billions of people. Maritime safety and security are vital because they represent the principle pillars upon which the global economy and the welfare of our global village greatly depend.
