Congressman Jonathan L. Jackson Statement on the Passing of Former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga

October 16, 2025

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

It is with profound sadness that I join the people of Kenya, Africa, and the global community in mourning the passing of the His Excellency Raila Amolo Odinga, former Prime Minister of the Republic of Kenya. His death marks the loss of one of Kenya’s greatest sons, a visionary statesman, freedom fighter, and enduring voice for democracy and justice.

Raila Odinga was more than a political leader; he was the moral compass of a nation striving toward equality, unity, and democratic reform. He remained steadfast in his belief that power must always serve the people. His courage in confronting injustice, even at great personal cost, inspired movements not only in Kenya but throughout the African continent.

Throughout his distinguished life, as a political prisoner, parliamentarian, prime minister, and Pan-Africanist, Raila Odinga stood as a symbol of resilience and reconciliation. He taught that democracy is not an event but a journey of constant renewal, and his leadership helped guide Kenya toward its 2010 constitutional reforms, a landmark achievement that reshaped the
nation’s political destiny.

Mr. Odinga’s passing is not merely the end of an era for Kenya, it is a loss felt by all who cherish the ideals of freedom, self-determination, and justice. His voice, both fearless and compassionate, will continue to echo through the generations of Africans who seek a freer, fairer, and more united continent.

On behalf of the constituents of Illinois’ 1st Congressional District, I extend my deepest condolences to President William Ruto, Mama Ida Odinga, their children Rosemary, Raila Jr., and Winnie, the Odinga Family and to the people of Kenya.

May the legacy of Raila Odinga continue to water the seeds of democracy and peace across Africa and the world.
